Declaring & Changing Majors

Deadlines to Declare or Change Major

  • Deadlines to declare a major:
    • For new freshmen admitted in the fall: October 1 of sophomore year.
    • For new freshmen admitted in the spring: March 1 of sophomore year.
  • Deadlines to change majors:
    • Students admitted to a Lerner major (other than Hospitality and Event Experience Management, Hospitality Industry Management or Sport Management) may change majors until October 1/March 1 of sophomore year.
    • Transfer students may apply to change majors, subject to department admission criteria. See the department admission requirements on this page.

After the deadline, you may still declare or change your major(s), but will be subject to department admission requirements. You are not guaranteed the major of your choice after October 1/March 1 of your sophomore year.

Sport Management majors that matriculated in 2017 fall and after, Entrepreneurship and B.A. in Economics that matriculated in 2022 fall and after, and all Hospitality and Event Experience Management and Hospitality Industry Management majors interested in changing their major to another business area must apply to the department and are subject to department admission criteria. What Is the “Business Undeclared” Policy?

All business undeclared students are required to declare a major within the Lerner College by the deadlines.

How Do I Declare a Major?

Log on to your UDSIS account and submit a request for change of major/minor form. Indicate the major(s) of your choice.

Until the deadline, you are guaranteed your choice of major(s) from the following:

  • Accounting
  • Business Analytics
  • Economics (B.S. or B.A.)
  • Economics Education
  • Finance
  • Financial Planning and Wealth Management
  • Global Enterprise Management
  • Hospitality and Event Experience Management
  • Hospitality Industry Management

Students whose major is outside of Lerner College of Business & Economics (BE) will now have limited access to BE courses. Non-Lerner students will only be able to register and complete up to 25 credits in their undergrad careers (excluding the Business Essentials [ACCT 200, BUAD 100, ECON 100 and FINC 200], transfer and test credit). Cross-listed courses owned by BE will also be affected. The information below will help you change to a Lerner College major. These requirements also apply to Lerner College students who have missed the deadline to declare a major. For more information, see the department admission requirements on this page.

  • Completed the following classes with a C- or better: ECON 101; ECON 103; and MATH requirement (MATH 114, MATH 115, MATH 117, MATH 221, MATH 232 or 241)
  • Students admitted to UD as of Fall 2017 and after must complete ECON 300 or ECON 301 with a C- or better.
  • Students admitted to UD as of Fall 2015 and after must complete at least one economics course with a grade of C- or better at the University of Delaware (not transferred in)
  • Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware
  • Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA to apply

  • Completed 12 credit hours at the University of Delaware (not transferred in)
  • Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA to apply

Apply – Accepts applications twice a year

Requirements

  • Students must confirm space availability in their class year; admission into the major is highly selective due to capacity limitations
  • Preference will be given to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher; however, students with a demonstrated record of involvement in entrepreneurship may be considered on a case by case basis
  • Completed 12 credits at the University of Delaware
  • Completed ENTR 350/BUAD 350 with a C- or better
  • An application and interview are required

  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply; the student will still be considered for admission on a case by case basis if a grade of B+ or better is earned in MISY 225.
