Degree Checklist
The courses required for the M.S. in BAIM are listed on the Lerner website: https://lerner.udel.edu/programs/masters-programs/business-analytics-and-information-management-ms/
Course descriptions
Look up a brief description for any UD class. Graduate-level classes start at the 600-level. Academic/University Breadth Requirements are only for undergraduate classes.
About Grades
See the University catalog for the complete set of grading policies. Below are the issues that come up most often.
The University of Delaware runs on a 4.0 scale. Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Index (commonly referred to as a GPA) to remain in good standing. Remember that the GPA is an average of your grades. A grade of C in one class may be offset by a grade of A in another.
Only graded, graduate-level classes with grades of C- or better count toward your degree. If you receive a D+ or lower in a Core/Required class, you must repeat (and pay for) the course until you pass. If you receive a grade of D+ or lower in an elective course, you do not have to repeat it, although you must make up the credits via another graded elective.
In order to graduate, you must have completed 30 graded credits (9 core/21 electives) with a final GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Disputing a Grade
First, being polite and professional at all times only helps the situation. Prepare your argument and then state your case.
Review the syllabus and calculate your grades based on the weights listed. Go as far as you can, then contact the professor to see where the grades differ. Politely inquire to make sure it is not a clerical error. A calm conversation focused on the numbers will keep it moving forward.
Remember that grades can be changed by the issuing professor at any time until your transcript is closed at degree conferral. If the disputed grade is in your final semester class, then you do have a time limit and need to visit with the professor sooner rather than later.
Please note that we do not get involved except in extenuating circumstances (car accidents, medical emergencies, etc.). The dispute process stays between the student and the professor issuing the grade.
Special Advising Requests
Please allow a minimum of 2 business days (more during the first/last two weeks of a semester/session) for us to deliver the following correspondence.
International Students Reduced Enrollment Form
Find this form at ISSS. It is used if you need only 1 or 2 classes in your final semester. We need to review and sign prior to the last day of Drop/Add for the respective semester.
Letters of Recommendation
We suggest that you contact a professor from a class you enjoyed or did well in. Your professors have observed your group work, leadership and class participation.
Degree Letters
These are issued by the Office of Graduate & Professional Education once your degree has been cleared and conferred, usually 3-4 weeks after your final semester/session concludes.
Assistance for BAIM students
Need help? Let us do it for you. Send a concise email message to Sarah Dix at sarahdix@udel.edu with your full legal name, SID#, and the class/es you want to register for or withdraw from. If you are getting an error code in UDSIS, give us some information so we can address the issue.
If you need to take a fall or spring semester off for any reason (an illness, relocation, job situation, wedding, etc.) let us know. Email your full legal name and SID# to sarahdix@udel.edu to request a leave. A Leave of Absence (LOA) does not affect your GPA and there is no fee for this status.

Qualifying Examination
The qualifying written exam, taken at the end of your first year, is based on the program’s core curriculum courses. You will receive a Pass or Fail grade for each of the six subjects in the qualifying examination.
- If you have received more than one grade of C or below in the core curriculum courses, you are ineligible to take the qualifying exam.
- If you have received a C or below in one course, you must pass all six subjects of the qualifying exam in order to advance in the program.
- If you have not received any grade of C or below in the core curriculum courses, you must pass five out of six subjects on the exam.
You may retake the exam in the subject(s) in which you receive less than a passing grade if you have passed three or more subjects in the first attempt. Qualifying examinations are offered in the summer, and the retake exam is scheduled in December of the following fall semester.
A summer research paper is also required, as part of the qualifying exam. This paper is due by the end of your third semester.
Dissertation Committee
After you pass the qualifying exam and no later than the end of your second year of study, you will establish a dissertation committee of at least four faculty members. You will consult with your dissertation committee to develop your customized program of study.
Candidacy Requirements
You must complete the Ph.D. candidacy requirements by the end of your third year. You will submit a formal, detailed research project proposal to your dissertation committee and give an oral defense.
Upon the recommendation of the dissertation committee, you may be admitted to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree.
Requirements for admission to doctoral candidacy:
- Complete at least one academic year of full-time graduate study in residence at the University of Delaware.
- Pass the qualifying exam.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform research.
- Have a research project accepted by the dissertation committee.
Written Dissertation and Oral Defense Requirements
The dissertation requirements involve the approval of your written dissertation and an oral defense. Your dissertation must have application and interest to cutting-edge practices in FSAN and must also be published.
The oral presentation is open to the public and all members of the FSAN program.
