Job Shadow Program

The Lerner Job Shadow Program connects you with professionals across many industries for short, hands-on career exploration experiences. You’ll gain valuable exposure to professional environments, with a minimal time commitment. Job shadows are half- or full-day experiences for undergraduate and graduate students that typically take place during June or July. They may be conducted onsite or virtually, depending on host availability. Make the most of the opportunity by asking open‑ended questions, observing communication styles and team dynamics, taking notes and reflecting on how the role aligns with your interests and strengths.

Student Checklist

• Confirm date, time, duration, and format with your host
• Research the organization and your host’s role
• Clarify dress code, parking, arrival procedures, or virtual setup
• Prepare thoughtful questions in advance
• Test technology for virtual experiences
• Plan professional attire appropriate to the workplace
• Bring a notebook or digital note‑taking option

A job shadow is a professional experience. You are representing yourself, Lerner College, and future students. Please remember to:

• Arrive on time (or log in early for virtual meetings)
• Dress professionally based on employer guidance
• Communicate clearly, respectfully, and professionally
• Listen actively and ask thoughtful questions
• Avoid phone use or multitasking during sessions
• Respect confidentiality and internal information
• Thank your host at the end of the experience
• Send a follow‑up thank‑you email within 24–48 hours
